How to Grow a Sprouted Onion

 photo All Natural Katie

I am always looking for quick and easy gardening projects. When one of my onions sprouted and started to rot, I decided to find out if I could plant it before throwing it in the compost pile. Planting a sprouted onion will not grow more onions, but will grow green onions and blooms that will produce seeds. Supposedly, from those seeds, more onions will grow. Sounds like a fun experiment. Below are the steps to planting a sprouted onion:

1.       Follow the sprouted greens to carefully cut and remove any dried and rotten parts. This will expose the “bulbs.”

2.       Separate the sprouted “bulbs.”

3.       Plant the sprouted “bulbs” in soil.

4.       Water regularly.

For my next gardening project, I have been looking at “The Gro Project” on the fun garden projects page to see what fun and creative projects others are starting. Miracle-Gro fun garden projects page is a great resource for any of your gardening needs. My next project is going to be a succulent centerpiece. I am in love with succulents! I plan on purchasing Miracle-Gro Cactus, Palm and Citrus Soil to provide the best start for my succulents.

If you are looking for more gardening projects or more general information on gardening, the Miracle-Gro website is a great resource. Miracle-Gro already offers Organic Choice Garden Soil and Organic Choice Potting Mix. I would like to see Miracle-Gro expand their line of organic and natural products and methods for taking care of my yard and my plants.

To Idle or Not to Idle?

I am a stickler for idling cars, to the point where (as the passenger) I reach over and turn my husband's car off for him if we are idling. My goal is to never idle, when possible.Whenever I am in a parking lot or in the garage, the car goes off. If I know I'm going to be waiting in a long line, I turn the car off.

Recently, I realized that the conveniences of drive-thru windows at coffee shops and banks are increasing the negative impact I make on the environment. I am not a fan of drive-thru windows because I feel like you end up spending more time doing the activity and you are idling among other idling cars. Gross! However, with a baby in the car, I am now choosing to use drive-thru windows. I have had pain and numbness in my wrists and getting the baby in the infant car seat out every time results in more pain and numbness. Yes, I can get the stroller out and try to maneuver into the bank or the coffee shop. Or, I can wear the baby. All good options! But all options increase the amount of times I spend running errands. I am on longer on my schedule. I am on the baby's schedule.

Today, I opt for using the drive-thru window, even if it means idling my car. We are not perfect "greenies" 100% of the time. I am learning that with a baby, something has got to give. A few minutes of idling once a week is what has given.

Baby Bullet [Giveaway]

Giveaway Hosted by: Elitemama and Sponsored by: Capital Brands

The Baby Bullet Care System has revolutionized the way you'll feed your baby for the first 3 years of life. Jarred baby food is a big expense compared to homemade food and jarred food contains unhealthy sugars, fillers and also preservatives. Even those jarred foods that are labeled organic! With the Baby Bullet, you can make and store an entire weeks worth of food that is healthy for the little ones in under 5 minutes.
The all-new Baby Blend Blade is specially designed to blend fruits, vegetables and a combination of meals from baby's first "stage one" purees to stage 3 toddler meals.

Although I am not a fan of the plastic storage containers, the fact that you make your own baby food is very environmentally friendly. And, every mom knows that anything to save time also helps!

No Nasty Chemicals with ecoSTORE [Review]

I am on a never-ending quest to find more eco-friendly, more natural, and more effective cleaning and body products. Those of you who are on the same quest will agree that the number of products that do not clean as well as their toxic counterparts is even greater than the number of products that do a comparable, yet even better, job of cleaning. Once you find that product or that brand, you stock up on it, being afraid that it will be discontinued. I use a few brands of eco-friendly cleaning and body products and would recommend them to anyone. ecoSTORE's commitment to No Nasty Chemicals (tm) is a reason why you should try this brand of cleaning products.

As an ecoSTORE Ambassador, I received the following products to review:
  • All Purpose Cleaner
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Toilet Cleaner
  • Gentle Laundry Liquid Super Concentrate
  • Pure Oxygen Whitener

I also received the Hand Wash and Laundry Liquid to give to others. Feedback included positive reactions to the Hand Wash smell (Rose and Cardamom), which is far from smelling "girly."

Check out my initial review of ecoSTORE's Auto Dish Powder and Body Wash. The Auto Dish Powder is no longer offered (sad face because I like it).

ecoSTORE Household Cleaners
Rating: total green check marks out of 5.

The Good
The Not So Good
No "nasty" chemicals
Some ingredients may cause health concerns (Phenoxyethanol, et al)
Fresh smell, not overpowering
Hand soap does not lather well, but hands feel clean

I love that ecoSTORE is committed to "no nasty chemicals" and tries to find better alternatives. Chemicals, EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database) to get more information about the ingredients in ecoSTORE products. (Please note that the Cosmetic Database is not the end-all-be-all source, but it does provide good information about the ingredients in products we use every day). For the  most part, ecoSTORE's ingredients are rated low in terms of toxicity, but there are a few ingredients that we should watch out for. I commend ecoSTORE.com for listing the ingredients for all of their products. If you have an allergy or a concern about a specific ingredient, you can check whether the product contains that ingredient or not.
whether natural or synthetic, present the biggest challenge when dealing with off-the-shelf cleaning products. I went to my trusty source (

Now that we have talked about the ingredients, let's talk about how the products actually clean. The All Purpose, Glass, and Toilet Cleaners did a great job of removing any scum and residue. One quick swipe and the grime was gone. I liked that I did not have to use a lot of the product. The Toilet Cleaner was easy to apply with the shape of the bottle. The smell was not overpowering and did not linger to the point where you keep smelling it for hours. I prefer lighter smells that go away.

If you are looking for a safer and less toxic alternative to household cleaning products, give ecoSTORE a try. You will not be disappointed. ecoSTORE has a variety of household and body products that are effective and economical.

Disclosure: I received the sample from the company in order to facilitate my review. No other compensation was received. I am under no pressure to return the product to the company or to write this review. This product review is based on my personal experiences. This review is objective and completely honest.
