Molkky Wooden Outdoor Game [Review]

Our family loves to spend time outdoors. Staying at home with my son gives me the opportunity to take him outside every day. Whether we are visiting a local park, picking green tomatoes from the garden, or just walking around the yard, we always feel better after getting some fresh air. When our extended family joins us, we take the outdoor games out of the garage and enjoy the outdoors. Molkky is an outdoor wooden game for all ages and all fitness levels.

Molkky is an outdoor throwing game that comes from Scandinavia and some call it Viking Bowling. based on a combination of chance and throwing accuracy. Molkky is an updated version of an old Scandinavian "throwing game" called Kyykkä that has been around for hundreds of years. One of the best things about Molkky is that just about anyone can place, no  matter the age or the skill level. Groups of all sizes and ages can play together.

Usage: Molkky can be played on grass, gravel, beach, dirt, or any outdoor surface. The wooden pieces are sturdy. The Molkky set includes a wooden carrying crate. Everything is made from 100% natural and unfinished pine wood sourced from sustainable Finnish forest with PEFC certification. I love that this outdoor game is non-toxic and uses no chemicals to finish the wood. After a game simply clean the molkky pins with a damp washcloth.

Play: The pins are arranged in a formation and the skittle pin is thrown to try to knock down some of the pins (similar to bowling). The pins are round and roll after they are knocked down. Each turn the pins are put back up exactly where they rolled from the previous turn so the entire playing area starts to spread out. If a player can skillfully knock down only one pin their score for that turns equals the number on the top of the pin knock down the No. 12 pin 12 points. The first player to knock down exactly 50 points wins the game but be careful not to go over 50 points or you will go back to 25 points.

My Thoughts:

My two favorite things about Molkky is that the pieces are made from unfinished PEFC wood (no exposure to toxic chemicals) and that the game can be played by anyone. When our extended family gets together, we have kids anywhere from 2.5 years to 12 years and adults. Everyone can play this game together. The older kids were able to participate and had a good time playing on a team with the adults. My 2.5 year old son tried to stack the pieces on top of the skittle pin. On a hard surface like the drive way, the pins rolled away too easily, so we switched to grass and it worked much better to keep the pins in the same area.

My two least favorite things about Molkky is that the unfinished wooden pieces are rough. The pins need to be sanded to make the surface more smooth, especially if children are playing with the pins. For the higher price point, I would expect that the unfinished wood surface would be smooth. The pins also got dented after a few games (and some rough play from the kids), but this usually happens with wooden toys.

The wooden Molkky game is an investment, but the pieces will last for a long time in our house. I would like to see the company pay more attention to details like sanding the wooden pins to make them more smooth. I like the storage box and our family has enjoyed playing the game.

About the Kinderfeets Balance Bike

The Kinderfeets is designed by a Dutch designer living in California. He originally made this bike for his son because what he wanted was not available. So what makes the Kinderfeets Balance Bike different than the other wooden balance bikes? Milk and Joy Organic Cotton Crocheted Necklaces are made with organic cotton and natural wooden beads. The ties are made from the same organic cotton yard and are adjustable. This means that you can adjust the length of the necklace or tie it to something else. I feel comfortable letting my baby chew on the necklace because there are no toxic chemicals going into his mouth. The wooden beads are a perfect size for his little mouth. The wooden beads are substantial enough, but do not weight down the necklace.

The crocheted teething necklace has become my favorite teething toy for Church. The baby can easily reach the necklace if I am wearing him or holding him. He can play with it or chew on it. The best part about the necklace is that it does not fall to the ground when the baby lets go of it because it is tied around my neck. Constantly bending down with the baby to pick up things off the floor is not good for the back and is distracting in Church. The teething necklace is like a toy that is always available. I do not have to worry about checking for dropped toys or teethers.

I have also used this necklace in the jogging stroller. I can tie it to the side and the baby can play with it. There is no risk of him throwing the necklace on the ground during a run or a walk.

Though I am no longer breastfeeding, the necklace can also be used as a breastfeeding and nursing necklace. When babies become easily distracted during breastfeeding, a toy or a necklace can be useful for keeping their attention on the task at hand.

Milk and Joy crocheted teething and nursing necklaces can be washed with mild soap and warm water by gently rubbing the crocheted beads, rinsing and letting air dry. Children under 3 years old should not be left alone with a teething necklace. Please do a safety check before wearing and letting a baby handle the necklace.

I love baby products that have multiple purposes. A product that can serve a specific purpose and double as a toy is a winner in my book. Since the baby puts everything in his mouth, I want to make sure that his toys are non-toxic, provide sensory stimulation, and provide teething relief. I have always liked fabric baby blocks, so when I came across Bird + Elephant on Etsy, I loved the selection of baby teething toy blocks.

Bird + Elephant baby teething blocks are approximately 3"x3". They are made using 100% GOTS Certified Organic fabrics, organic threads and ribbons, a natural wooden ring, and filled with environmentally-friendly, all natural stuffing made from corn sugar. Teething blocks are also available without the wooden ring. The Cranes design block that I received has side with knit fabric and tags and sides with a very soft cotton fleece fabric and tags. The wooden ring is securely tied on, but can be removed for washing purposes. I love the adorable, designer fabrics. The bright colors and contrasting patterns are perfect for any child from newborns to toddlers. I also love that the fabric patterns are gender neutral.

My baby has loved playing with this block. From the moment that I opened it and held it out in front of him, he was excited. We have even played tug-o-war with it. He grabs onto the wooden ring and I grab onto a fabric tag on the opposite side; we gently pull back and forth. Not only is the baby teething block a great sensory and teething toy, but it also helps with motor and social development. The rattle inside is a great attention getter and entertainer.

Care: Remove wooden ring by untying fabric ribbon. Machine wash on gentle with warm water. Air dry or tumble dry on air or low heat setting. Fiber may shift during laundering. Gently massage the block with fingertips to move the fiber back into place.
