The temperatures have cooled off. The leaves have started to turn orange and yellow colors. The garden is slowing down a bit. The warm Summer months have ended and we have entered a season of rest. Summer months are usually filled with lots of outside time, family travel, and just more activities in general. When the weather become cooler, we stay inside, we warm up together under a blanket and watch a movie, and we rest during the Winter. Here are some of the eco-friendly ideas we are implementing this Fall.
1. Upgraded Water Filter System
I finally decided to upgrade our old Brita water pitcher filter to a more robust and purifying system like the Berkey water filter system. I also purchased the fluoride and arsenic filters to help us to have the most pure water we can have in our home. I have been wanting this water purifying system for a long time and am so excited to finally have it setup and in use.
I chose the Big Berkey size, which is perfect for our family of 3. This provides enough water for at least one day. I can tell a subtle taste difference in the water between the old Brita water pitcher filter and the Big Berkey water filter system. I'm glad our family finally made this investment in more pure water.
2. Canning More
I have been canning homemade apple butter for a few years. I've canned some other vegetables, like peppers, in the past, but really have not gone outside this comfort zone. This year, after my parents brought me 4.5 boxes of homegrown, organic apples from their back yard, I had to venture out to try new recipes. In addition to the apple butter, I canned sliced apples and apple jam. It was not as hard as I imagined it would be.
As the Summer growing season wraps up and there is an abundance of harvest, I want to try my hand at canning vegetables like tomatoes, green beans, and salsas.
3. Using Our Food Storage Supply
Being prepared for an emergency situation, whether natural or man made, is something that is very important to me. I feel like there have been so many natural disasters this year. It is good to be prepared for those. I try to keep a short term food supply in the deep freezer, regular freezer, pantry and downstairs in the laundry room. Our laundry room has a huge storage closet. I purchased a few heavyweight plastic bins with locking lids to store dry goods. The plastic bins help to protect them from any critters or bugs.
One of the things I have not been as good at is using our short term food storage supply. Therefore, this is on my list for soups, stews, and crockpot meals as I use the beans, grains, and frozen meat.
4. Thrifting
I have been so surprised at the amount of nice and high quality items that I have been able to find at thrift stores. Initially, I got into thrifting because I was not able to find an older style of jeans at one of the popular jeans stores, but I found them at a local Goodwill. I knew the exact style and size that fit me so well. I found that style at thrift stores. Since I started thrifting, I have bought lots of adorable decor items for the home, stuff for the kitchen, and wooden toys for my son. Don't be afraid of the thrift store!
5. Drive Less, Walk More
Even though our neighborhood does not have sidewalks and we do not live in an area that has a lot of shopping and restaurants close to us, we still try to walk as much as possible. There is a little shopping center about one mile away. When I need something from one of the stores there, I will take my 3.5 year old in our BOB jogging stroller and either run or walk there. We also try to combine trips to store that are close so we are not driving from one place to another. Taking a toddler in and out of a car seat multiple times is hard enough! My son is at the age now where he can walk quite a bit and I take advantage of that.
These are 5 eco-friendly ideas that we are implementing for the Fall. Some of them we were doing already, but want to kick it up a notch.
What are some eco-friendly things your family is doing this Fall??

The Best Running Belt [Review]
There have been many times where I need to take my keys or my cell phone (or even some cash) with me on a run. After borrowing my husband's running belt for a 15K race, I have wanted a belt for myself! I love being able to store a good amount of items and carry them on my hips. The Stealth Tech Running Belt can be used for running, hiking, exercises of any kind, and even like a modern fanny pack!
Stealth Tech Running Belt

Stealth Tech Running Belt is designed to fit most smart phones and smaller phones, plus other items like credit cards, cash, keys, and other small items. The fabric is synthetic and has a good stretch to it, but also fits snugly over the hips.
Fit: The running belt comes in sizes from XS to XL and fits sizes from 0 to 16 for Women and 23-38 for Men. I ordered XS. My usual pant size is 2 and the XS fits very well. The belt is snug on my hips, but not too tight. The belt lies flat against the body. Running belts should fit snug so that they stay in place during the run.
Usage: Here is a tip about wearing and loading the running belt. You put the running belt on with the pocket openings on the outside. Load all the items that you intend to take with you, then turn the belt over so the side with the pocket openings is on the outside. Everything will stay in place!
The belt is super easy to wash because it can be washed in the washing machine and dried in the dryer. To prolong the life of it, I am going to let the running belt air dry.
My Thoughts: I like the fit of the running belt. My iPhone 5c fits very well inside (horizontally) and does not move. The key clip is useful because a key does move around in the belt, especially if the belt is fitting a little lose. I plan on using the running belt not just for running. When I am out with my toddler at a park or somewhere where I do not want to bring my purse, I usually bring the car keys, water bottle, phone, and DSLR camera. Most of the time, it is a juggling act to hold everything plus carry a tired toddler. I plan on wearing the running belt to store the car keys and the phone, along with anything extra like a credit card or cash.
Stealth Tech's Best Running Belt is a great accessory for running, outdoor activities, and travel.

Sports Armband for iPhone 5 [Review]
Listening to music during exercise is a must for me. Running is my therapy. When I run, I like to let my mind go wherever, or nowhere. Sometimes, I prefer to listen to a specific genre of music to hear what it is telling me. Other time, I prefer upbeat songs to get through a hard run. I decided to finally get a sports armband for my iPhone so that I can not only have the ability to listen to music, but also the ability to make a phone call or send a text message. Limm Sports Armband is a fully adjustable armband that is slim and fits tight around my skinny arm.
Limm Sports Armband

Limm Sports Armband is designed to be used with the following iPhones: 5 / 5s / 5c / 4 / 4s and iPod Touch 4 /5. The armband is meant to fit iPhones without the case, but might be able to fit a phone with a slim case. The case is made from Lycra and Neoprene, so the fabric stays mostly dry during a hard, sweaty workout. The Neoprene fabric plus the screen protectors are a great feature if you get stuck in a light rain during your workout. The fabric has a little bit of a stretch to it. The velcro is strong.
The key holder is a nice feature, but I found that it was not very functional. The key opening was hard to keep open while trying to fit the key and the key was challenging to remove when I returned home.
The phone armband comes in two sizes: Slim and Average.
Slim fits arm sizes of 8.8" to 11.0" in circumference.
Average fits arm sizes of 10.6" to 16.1" in circumference.
Fit: I received the Average size so that my husband could also use the armband with his iPhone 4. The Average size did fit my upper arm, but I had to tighten it as much as it would go. It was a bit loose during the run, but once I started sweating a bit, the armband started sticking more to my skin. If I were only using the armband myself, I would have ordered the Slim size because I have skinny arms and most armbands are usually too big for me.
My Thoughts: I like that the fabric helps the armband and the iPhone to stay dry during sweaty workouts or during light rains. I also like that the armband itself is very slim (does not stick out very far from my arm). The armband needs to be cleaned by hand, but that is easy to do. I usually take it in the shower with me and use soap to clean it, then wring and air dry. Since the key holder was not very functional for me, I will probably put the key behind the iPhone in the same pocket.
Limm Sports Armband is affordable and will do the job that it is intended to do. I do wish the key holder was more accessible and easier to use.

Limber Stretch Hip Hugs Belt [Giveaway]
I received the Limber Stretch belt in size small. My usual pant size is 2 and the size Small fits very well. The belt is form fitting and lies flat again the body. As a comparison, my husband's running belt by another brand is a size small and he wears size 34 pants. His belt is a little lose on me, meaning that when I run, it moves up and down. Running belts should fit very snug on the hips so they stay in place when you move.
I love the bigger width of this belt. It is tall enough to fit my iPhone and even has a special pocket for it. Otherwise, there are lots of pockets throughout the belt so you can store just about anything in this running belt.

Certified organic cotton

Metal D buckle
| |
A few years ago, when I was taking a weekly yoga class, we sometimes used yoga straps. I always enjoyed using them to assist with stretching or holding certain poses. When I received the Clever Yoga organic yoga strap, I was very impressed with the high quality, durable cotton. I also love that the cotton is certified organic. The packing at minimal and recyclable. That is also important to me.
The Clever Yoga strap I received comes with a metal D buckle. I prefer this type of buckle over a plastic one. The D buckle allows for quick adjustments in shortening or lengthening the yoga strap.
I wanted to start out using the yoga strap for stretching. My back and shoulders are periodically sore and tense from carrying around my toddler. Therefore, I wanted to focus on stretching and strengthening my upper body. My favorite ways to use the yoga strap have been to aid in straightening the back for better posture by using the yoga strap to straighten my back and hold it in that pose. I also enjoy using the strap to do side stretches.
My biggest discovery has been the ability of the yoga strap to also strengthen my upper body. When I am using the yoga strap to assist in a pose, my arms hold the strap ends. This is a great workout for my arm, shoulders and upper back.
I would recommend Clever Yoga organic yoga strap. The organic cotton is durable and will last a long time. The price is very affordable, especially for organic cotton. A yoga strap is a required accessory for any yoga level. Yoga straps can also be used for physical therapy.

Train Bulletproof Picasso Album [Review]
On the drive to the grocery store and back, I started listening to the album. I love how the songs are pretty representative of Train as a group, but also vary in their styles. Some songs reminded me of being on the beach, while other songs, like Cadillac Cadillac, would be great motivational songs during my runs. Don't Grow Up So Fast and Baby Happy Birthday touched me on a personal level. Overall, the songs were upbeat and put me in a good mood.

PRO Compression Marathon Socks [Review]
Running has become one of my favorite stress reduction and energy boosting activities. Though I am a minimalist when it comes to running accessories, I do enjoy a few key running accessories to support my running. A great pair of running shoes is essential to support the feet, the legs and the spine. A great pair of compression socks is beneficial for reducing lactic acid build up and sore muscles.Rating: total green check marks out of 5.
Coupon Code: use COMP40 to receive 40% off marathon socks and sleeves.

Marathon full-length compression socks encompass the whole bottom of the leg, the foot, the ankle, and the calf up to the knee. PRO compression marathon socks use graduated technology to improve blood flow, which results in better and more consistent performance. The compression socks also help to reduce the amount of fatigue experienced and help to recover quicker. Compression socks support muscles and tendons to reduce inflammation, swelling and soreness.
I was looking toward trying full-length marathon compression socks because I always battle calf soreness and aches after long runs and after hard runs. I was looking for something that would reduce the need for me to get up in the middle of the night and stretch my calves because the cramps would wake me up.
Being a little worried about being too hot in the full-length socks, I chose a cooler day to run on. PRO Compression Marathon Socks are made from a blended synthetic material that is lightweight and provides moisture control. I prefer to wear the minimal amount of clothing required when running, especially on days where the temperatures are above 80 degrees. I did not think that wearing full-length socks was going to be easy.
On today's run, I chose to go a longer distance on a hilly route. My calves get a good workout when running up and down hills. Perfect for trying out the compression socks!
One of the downsides to the socks for me is that I need a thicker sock for my current running shoes. I had to wear a thinner sock on top of the compression sock to comfortably fit in my running shoe. If I purchase new running shoes, I would probably be able to wear the compression socks on their own.
I got over the fear of being too hot in the socks once I realized that the moisture control helped to keep my calves and feet cool. I liked the support that the socks provided for my calves. The sensations is a bit different when wearing full-length compression socks. I became used to it after a few minutes and focused on how good my calves were going to feel afterwards.
That evening and during the night, my calves felt better than they usually do. A little soreness, but not the usual aches and cramps in the middle of the night. Success! The PRO Compression Marathon Socks did their job! If you are looking for a way to increase your performance and reduce pain and aches, try a pair of compression socks.

Yoga Sweat Workout DVD [Review]
Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.
During the cold winter days and the hot summer days, I take a break from running outside and pop in a workout DVD. A workout DVD gives me a nice break from running. Otherwise, I would get bored and stop pushing myself to improve my pace or my distance. Workout DVDs are a great compliment to running because they work different muscles. Yoga helps to stretch and strengthen the muscles that are critical for running. Yoginiology Yoga Sweat DVD is a powerful and fun yoga workout for weight loss and for beginners.
Yoga Sweat DVD

($17.99)
Yoga Sweat workout DVD includes traditional yoga poses mixed with creative flowing style to help you lose weight, tone your body and workout in a fun and effective way. The DVD contains two workouts that are 30 minutes each and warm up/cool down routines. Julie Schoen will help you to burn calories, increase flexibility and tone your body.
Session 1 targets burning calories and building heat. The yoga poses focus on toning and strengthening legs and glutes.
Session 2 continue the calorie burn with a vigorous sequence of yoga poses to strengthen the arms, back and core and to flatten the stomach.
The total time for both sessions is 80 minutes. Though I like having both sessions for a total body workout, I like that I can choose to do just one of the workouts if I am short on time. Splitting the sessions into lower body and upper body workouts allows me to choose my focus area for the workout.
The DVD is designed for beginners, though I feel like it is more appropriate for an intermediate level. The video moves quickly during the two workout sessions. If you are a beginner or have never practiced yoga before, it might take a few sessions to learn the poses. I would recommend watching the DVD once throughout or becoming familiar with some of the poses before attempting the first time.
Even for someone like me who has practiced yoga before and does so periodically, Yoga Sweat was perfect! I was able to get a great workout. After a couple of weeks, I felt more toned and stronger. The Yoga Sweat DVD helped to improve my running by strengthening my core and my legs. Yoginiology Yoga Sweat DVD is a great workout for a beginner or intermediate level person. You will see results!

I installed Lumenx mountable bicycle light on my adult bicycle. The installation was quick and easy. I removed the screw from the connector piece, placed around the handlebar, and screwed it on. The connector piece has a thick piece of rubber that provides cushioning and protection. I love that the bicycle light is easy to install and remove in case I would want to use it on a different bicycle. The light fits any bike, whether adults or child, street or mountain.
The zoom capability allows you to adjust how much of the road ahead you want to see or just use the flashlight to illuminate yourself to oncoming cars. The flashlight is made from durable military grade aluminum and seems like it would be able to withstand shocks and drops very well. The flashlight can be removed (while keeping the connector piece on the bike) and used a flashlight in an emergency situation.
