Garden: Spring Cleaning

Today is a gorgeous day outside. The sun is shinning and the temperature is warming up above 50 degrees. I believe some might call this a perfect day to start prepping the garden and flower beds for the spring and summer. I cut away most of the dried branches and foliage in the Fall, but there were still a few plants that needed a trimming. The compost piles and bin needed some dried material.

The exciting part about trimming in the Spring is that you can see what plants are starting to come up. I love walking around the yard and seeing all the little sprouts. First, this means that warmer weather is almost here. Second, it means that the plants survived the winter yet again (hehe, I have killed some plants in my gardening days). I cannot wait to start planning veggies in the garden in April.

Summer is just around the corner!

Eco-Friendly Excitement: Reusing a Thank You Card Box

I am so excited about all of my "eco-friendly excitements" lately, or maybe it just means that I am staying up to date on my fellow eco-friendly bloggers' posts and am paying more attention to what I can be doing better. :)

I wrote Thank You cards yesterday and was left with this adorable box. My initial reaction was to recycle since the box is made of cardboard/paper. However, I remember a recent Change the World Wednesday challenge that prompted us to figure out how we can reuse something instead of recycling it or throwing it out. Instantly, the idea popped into my head that this box would make a great gift box. I can fill it with items like a gift card, travel sizes of natural body products, or a cute pair of locally made earrings.

Eco-Friendly Excitement: Compostable Plastic Cup?

During our last road trip, we discovered a fun little lunch place. The place serves some organic and some locally sourced foods and everything is compostable, including the food (without the oils), bowls, utensils, and plastic cups. I have not done much research on compostable plastic. I do know that something is added to the plastic to make it biodegradable. I saved the plastic cup to add to my compost bin and see just how it takes to decompose. I will keep you up to date!

Eco-Friendly Excitement: UPS Box

One of the joys of working from home (as opposed to being in the office) is receiving packages! I usually sit in the dining room because I like to look out the big bay window at the road. The most exciting part is when a FedEx or UPS truck stops in front of our house. I begin to resemble a little girl about to open a gift. Today, the UPS truck stopped in front of our house. I stopped what I was doing and watched the UPS man carry a big box up to the porch. My excitement grew! Any box is fun, but a big box is even better! As I was bringing the box inside, I noticed that it was a little "mangled." The corners were roughened, the box was not put together very well, and the tape....well, you can see the tape for yourself in the picture!

My first thought: This tape will be easy to remove so I can recycle the box!

Yes, this is what this eco-friendly girl thinks of first when she receives a package that looks like this!

My second thought: I hope nothing fell out!
